Cynthia Persaud: The Rhetoric Of Textual Editing

While Tottel’s Miscellany and Devonshire are all poems they have many differences. Tottle’s Miscellany is more of an advance read while Devonshire Manuscript is more for bloggers or people who are not really into advance literature. Different text holds the attention of different audiences. Tottel Miscellany is for readers who like to stick to the original texts and are not in favor of remixes while Devonshire Manuscript is for readers who like to mix things up. While on the Social Edition of the Devonshire Manuscript page I felt that it was more confusing to read some of the poems that were on the page. I also looked to the left of each poem and there was a given picture of the poems written on scribes. I tried to read it through the picture and found myself having a difficult time reading the words. While navigating through the website I found so many poems. There is a poem there for everyone and even if you think you may not like any of the poems because its old English , you can definitely find a title to grab your attention. Throughout my education, I was always told not to use Wikipedia or Wikipedia was consider to be an untrustworthy source. While scrolling though the page I just felt that maybe anyone can change the words in these poems and we won’t even know the real story. One poem I like from Tottel’s Miscellany is “ Complaint of a lover rebuked”. This poem is about the power of love. The poet is confuse because he’s thinking about his love one but could possibly be in danger because he’s thinking with his heart and not his mind. When the poet was in trouble, the one he though he loved did not do anything to help him so instead he rebukes her and wants nothing to do with her.

  1. Hi Cynthia,
I do agree that The Devonshire Manuscript is a blog and each one of us can find a poem to site us. Does this makes The Devonshire Manuscript less credible or can we still view it as a true master piece.

  2. Hey, why do you think Devonshire manuscript is less advanced?
