Tottel’s Miscellany Sons and Sonnets of Henry Howard, Earl or Survey, Sir Thomas Wyatt and others was first published in 1528 to 93. According to the introduction of Tottel’s Miscellany, Richard Tottel was a very well connected to affluent crowd as a result made him one of the most sought after writer at that time. This book was one of the first literary books to be printed at that time and the publishing company was very unsure on whether a book of poem would really sell. The Devonshire Manuscript is a wiki book that is written in old English in which anyone reading this book would have issues pronouncing many words. Although both Tollel’s Miscellany and The Devonshire Manuscript are both written by good poets they are very different in many ways. I prefer Tottel’s Miscellany because it is in a book form while the other is a wiki book. I am able to read Miscellany fluently with out any interruption of wondering what is this word. Also, Miscellany was revised several times, the edition that I am currently using in class was published in 2011 so it is revised which makes it so much easier to read. However, The Devonshire Manuscript is still its original text. However, I did not enjoyed the introduction of Miscellany because I felt as though the writer added so much his/her opinions into the introduction and my thought were if I wanted to know more about each poem etc. I would research it. I love to read a book and formulate my own opinion but some how I got that the introduction took that away from me. Also, Tottel’s Miscellany influenced so many generation of people whether it was Edward IV or Queen Elizabeth they all thought of this book as a great poems that should be cherish.
The social edition of the Devonshire manuscript is the only record to date of early Tudor poetry. What is great about is that this manuscript documented women of that era on literacy platform. In those days many books would exclude women as though they did not exist or were not smart enough to read or write. In the Devonshire Manuscript we first see collaboration with men and women textual works and poem. When and where did the concept that women were not smart started? Love poems were written which in those days was frown upon as something that should be shared privately. An example of one such line “Alas that euer prison stronge / sholde such too louers seperate”. Which speaks about lovers who felt in prison and there separation. This text was written in the 16 century in Brittan and I would perceive what the perception was at that time by both men and woman would say only a very vulgar women would ever speak in this manner did this sort of poem had to be approved by a governing body before it was approved for this sort of manuscript.
However, I do think that both texts are a work of true artist who work we were able to preserve which help us better understand how women and men though about back then and also that everything that we are currently doing today are remixes of something done before.

Hey Mpenzi,
You did a great job with the lovers in jail poem, in the current generation you can still share emails and see loved ones in jail but imagine how these people felt back then? Those poems were written with a lot of emotion and it makes it really special to actually go back and understand it. You also did get me thinking about the gender issues of the writing. Good stuff!

Hi Mpenzi, I believe they should be a printed version of the Devonshire manuscript . Also, I prefer Tottel Miscellany over Devonshire because its written in a very understandable modern english language. Moreover, your analysis of the poem is wonderful and i think its interesting how you are connecting it to our present society.

Hi Mpenzi, how long did it take you to analyze the poems? It took me a while and I was still unsure. I understood Tottle after reading it the second or third time but the Devonshire poems was still unclear to me after reading it several times.
