Welcome!
- Introductions: your name, major, status (senior? junior?), something about yourself. and what you think this course is/will teach you
- What IS this course, exactly?
- What is the Digital Humanities?

In short: whenever we use digital technologies to (re)mediate non-digital artifacts (books, textiles, pamphlets, sounds, etc), we need digital humanities.
But we can also use coding and computerized/machine reading to count things for us:

DH is about much more than scanning and counting, however. It’s also about access, inclusion, and creation… among many other things.
Let’s see how Ramsey uses data…

Online-hour assignments:
- Read the syllabus thoroughly.
- Watch this website walk-though.
- Register with the Commons and Create an “About Me” post {log in; click “+ new” blog; title it “Your Name/Username”; and select “about us” category}
- Play around! Add images, videos, and text to get acquainted with our online environment. See this walk-through video if you need help (note that I failed at creating a featured image–make sure there is a thumbnail on that right hand-side box before saving)
- If you don’t already have one, make a Twitter account. We’ll have assignments that will require to occasionally follow and analyzing postings, so you will need one. Start following some DH-related folks (check out Prof. Silva’s (@andiesilva) “following” for some placesĀ to start).
- Complete this short questionnaire (Google Forms)
Next Week:
- Consider attending DH-Week
- Post your first blog!
- Read and annotate Eisenstein (see Schedule for link)
